After reviewing several nomination forms, Florida Southern Roofing has chosen its second Roofs for Heroes recipient, Corporal Roy Bostic of Port Charlotte, Florida.
Bostic served as an Army Motor Transport Operator in Tikrit, Iraq, where he encountered improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades, and horrible living conditions as he oversaw the safety of, not only the vehicles in the convoys he protected, but their cargo and passengers.
Upon his return, Roy purchased a small home and he has worked diligently to get ahead, but PTSD and the toll that 7 years in a warzone took on his body have made things difficult. Nevertheless, he managed to get new windows, a new air conditioning unit, and new electrical and plumbing for his home, but an unexpected expense in excess of $5,000 to repair the damage his teeth sustained while in Iraq meant that he would have to postpone the desperately needed roof replacement he was saving for.
Luckily, Susan Bostic, Roy’s mother heard of Florida Southern Roofing’s Roofs for Heroes program and submitted a nomination form that would lead to a well-deserved break for her son. As was the case in 2016, when Florida Southern Roofing rolled out the program, the team decided to get their business partners involved so Roy and Nicole will be getting much more than a new roof (see enclosure).
On Saturday, December 7, starting at 8:30 a.m., you will have the opportunity to witness a made-for-TV home makeover as Florida Southern Roofing and their partners in this endeavor converge at 21124 McGuire Ave Port Charlotte, the home of Roy and Nicole Bostic (list of partners & invitation enclosed).

Repairing or replacing a roof can be a daunting task. Choosing a dependable roof contractor with a track record of ethical business practices and quality work will make the job less stressful, but how do you choose the right company?
This checklist will help you make an informed decision:
• It’s really tempting to go with the lowest bidder, but a subpar job will cost you a lot more money and frustration in the long run. Make sure you look at factors other than price.
• Make sure the contractor you hire has experience with jobs that are similar to yours.
• Look at projects they’ve completed in the recent past and get references so you can verify that the owners of those structures were satisfied with the contractor’s work.
• Ask to see the company’s certificates of insurance and make sure their liability and workers’ compensation insurance are current.
• Ask about available material warranties from the different manufacturers and installation warranties from the contractor.
• Choose a contractor that’s been around for a while. Experience and reputation matter.
• Make sure the contractor has an emergency plan that includes securing or removing any loose materials if faced with the threat of severe weather during the installation period.
• If you have a Board of Directors and/or a Management Company, have them meet in person to review the proposal and meet with the contractor.
• Narrow your search by looking only at contractors from your area.

Below is a closer look at some of the benefits of metal roofing systems as well as the drawbacks you may encounter when considering a metal roof for your home.
1.) Metal is Lightweight
Metal roofing, depending on its gauge, can weigh anywhere from .7 to 1.3 pounds per square foot. Other common roofing materials like asphalt shingles can weigh 2 to 2 ½ pounds per square foot, and tile can weigh as much as 10 pounds per square foot.
2.) Longevity
When considering to replace the roof on your home, longevity is a huge factor in your choice of roof material. You want something that will stand the test of time and last. Metal roofs have been found to last up to 70 years. This is much longer than traditional asphalt roofing which usually lasts from 10 to 20 years, and in the Florida sun can be much less.
3.) Fire Resistant
Metal Roof systems are given a Class A fire rating (which is the most resistant). Metal roofs are noncombustible, and thus are given the great rating.
4.) Energy Efficient
Metal Roof systems can save you a lot of money annually on energy costs. A metal roof reflects the hot Florida sun’s energy and blocks heat transmission from the roof to building members and living space. This will immensely cut back on your homes cooling costs.
5.) Additional Re-Sale Value
Installing metal roofing on your home can help in the long-term if you plan to sell your home. According to Metal Roofing Alliance, homeowners who replace their roofing systems with standing-seam metal show a rate

What started out as one roof for one deserving man quickly morphed into a life-changing event for Mr. Harris Nelms when Florida Southern Roofing decided to get some of their friends involved.
ELLENTON, Florida (January 19, 2016) – Florida Southern Roofing (FSR) has always given back to the community it serves, but owners Brian and Tim Wallace, were determined to do more. Less than one week after introducing their new “Roofs for Heroes” concept to their staff and asking them to start looking for worthy recipients, as if by fate, Dave Daily of the Bradeb River VFW approached Cindi Bass, Director of Business Development for Florida Southern, and asked her if they ever did roofs for charity.
Daily put Cindi in touch with Chaplain George Johnston who had the perfect candidate for the inaugural Roofs for Heroes donation. Unable to afford some desperately-needed roof repairs and physically incapable of performing them himself, Mr. Harris Nelms, a veteran with a service-connected disability, was forced to cover his roof with plastic to keep water from entering his home. Knowing this was not a long-term solution, he reached out to the VFW for assistance.
After visiting the Nelms residence, Florida Southern realized that the need was far greater than they could have imagined, so they decided to reach out to some of their favorite business partners who did not hesitate to lend a helping hand and Roofs for Heroes snowballed into a life-changing event for one man. Please take a look at the impressive list of contractors and vendors that FSR was able to assemble.
